Along the course of the river, the team observed the progress made by the survivors of Cyclone Nargis. Until now, most of them were relying on the food provided by Government, UN and I/NGOs and local private donors. Due to the severe weather conditions and safety concerns, the team stayed overnight in Kyein Chaung Gyi village tract where 400 households with 900 plus people are residing. According to residents, more than 3,000 people lost their lives in Kyein Chaung Gyi village tract alone. All of the villages visited lost people as a result of the storm. The estimated number of fatalities varied from 100 to more than 300. The team also noticed that decayed corpses were visble along the river from Sa Laung Kya to Kyein Chaung Gyi village tract. Even after 40 days since Nargis, about 100 decaying corpses are scattered along the river bank mixing with trees and bushes. Most of the villages reached requested insect-killers or fly-killers as lots of flies, mosquitoes and Phyoke (small insects) make troubles for the people, such as causing allergies and skin diseases. The team also experienced the tremendous amount of flies and mosquitos during the trip to Bokalay.
