Reconstruction efforts of Gaygu Village
Gaygu, which was affected by the storm Nargis, is situated in the south west of Phyarpon and very close to Bogale township border. Through 25 feet canal, it takes 1.5 hours to reach there by small boat. Under the Gaygu village tracts, there are 4 villages and about 412 households.

After the storm, some of the houses were repaired, rebuilt with the leftover thatch or borrowed from the neighbors, however, many would only be adequate for temporary use. Villagers whose houses were totally destroyed have had to stay with their relatives and neighbors.

Selection Process

We went through the eastern and western part of the village with the local representatives and observed the situation of the houses. We interviewed the villagers whose houses are in worse condition based on the following criteria for the selection.

(1)    Female headed house
(2)    Elderly headed house
(3)    A family with all children under 18 years old
(4)    A big family which is in the third-lowest level (if the villager income is divided into three groups)

Among 49 houses, we selected 20 houses based on the selection criteria. After observation, we discussed with the local representatives who confirmed that the selected 20 houses are the most needy. Please find below selected list of the houses with the pictures.

Providing meidcal supplies and health education and handover new house

We revisited the village on July 6 to see the completed houses. Even though, our standardized measurement for a house is 15ft x 10ft, the completed houses have different measurements. We provided the same number of thatches, bamboos and nails. The sizes vary since they incorporated their existing supplies (some left over supplies from the damaged structures) and added those with the new building materials. Everybody was satisfied with their houses. Thanks to Myanmar Charity Group.

Eastern Part

We interviewed 33 households from eastern part and 16 households from western part. Compare to the western part, the villagers from eastern part are poorer. Majority of villagers' main profession is casual labor. Therefore, it is very difficult for them to rebuild the house.
